Appetizer (30 mins) - Introduction to New Words & Phrases

Start the session by immersing students in the rich history of 中国象棋 (Chinese chess). Learn the story of “楚河汉界,” a historical reference to the boundary between the Chu and Han states, which not only plays a symbolic role in the game but also reflects a pivotal moment in Chinese history. Explore where the game of 象棋 (Xiàngqí) originated, tracing its evolution across various dynasties, from its ancient beginnings to its modern-day status as a popular sport. Delve into the vocabulary and phrases commonly used in the game, providing a linguistic foundation that will enhance the overall learning experience.

Main Course (30 mins) - Now, Let's Practice

Transition from theory to practice as students learn about the names, meanings, and roles of each chess piece in the game of Xiàngqí. Understand the strategic significance of each piece, such as the General (将/帅), the Advisors (士/仕), and the Elephants (象/相), among others. The rules of the game will be broken down step-by-step, ensuring a clear understanding of how the pieces move and interact on the board. In addition, students will be introduced to basic techniques and strategies that beginner players can use to gain an advantage, setting the stage for more advanced play in future sessions.

Dessert (30 mins) - Open Discussions

Conclude the lesson with a dynamic, interactive session tailored to the number of students enrolled. For smaller groups, initiate trial game sessions where students can apply what they've learned in a controlled, supportive environment. For larger groups, focus on troubleshooting specific moves and pre-set plays, allowing students to ask questions and solve problems collaboratively. This final segment not only reinforces the day's lessons but also encourages a deeper engagement with the game through hands-on experience and open dialogue.
